Dr. Paola Fioretto is Professor in Medicine at the University of Padova, Padua, Italy. Her research interests focusses on renal structure and ultrastructure in diabetes. Dr. Fioretto’s research interests also include the effects of glucose lowering therapies on the development and progression of diabetic kidney disease.
Dr. Fioretto’s contributions to the understanding of diabetic kidney disease include descriptions of heterogeneity in the structural lesions underlying renal dysfunction in type 2 diabetes, and the reversal of established diabetic glomerulopathy lesions in patients with type 1 diabetes after pancreas transplantation. Dr. Fioretto has received several awards, including the Albert Renold Award and Golgi Prize from the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD). Professor Fioretto was Vice President of the EASD and President of the European Diabetic Nephropathy Study Group of the EASD
