Dr. Francesco is a Full Professor of Endocrinology and Chair of the Department of Precision and Regenerative Medicine and the Ionian Area at Aldo Moro University of Bari, Italy, as well as Director of the Division of Endocrinology at Policlinico Hospital of Bari. His scientific work focuses on translational research in endocrinology and diabetology, with particular interest in the mechanisms of insulin resistance and beta-cell dysfunction in type 2 diabetes, and the effects of anti-diabetic drugs on the pancreas and cardiovascular system. He has received several prestigious international awards, including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Fellowship, Mary K. Iacocca Foundation Fellowship, and the Glaxo-Wellcome Award from EASD. In Italy, he has been honored with the Aldo Pinchera and Cassano Prizes from the Italian Society of Endocrinology and the Alcmeone Award from the Italian Society of Diabetology.
He served as the Italian Delegate for the European Commission’s COST actions on diabetes and was President of the Italian Society of Endocrinology from 2019 to 2021. He currently serves as Senior Vice-President of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD).
